Welcome to Iaorana Te Otea 2008-2009

Iaorana!

Iaorana te Otea, Tahitian for “greetings from the drum beats”, is a student-run organization at University of California, Santa Barbara. We practice two times a week teaching both oteas (fast-paced dances set to drum beats), and aparimas (dances that tell a story). Along with dancing, we also teach drumming. Anyone is welcome to join Iaorana Te Otea, no experience is neccessary.

We have potlucks every other week, which a great family atmosphere to get to know each member in the group. Every quarter we have a retreat. For the last two years, we went camping at El Capitan Beach State Park. Iaorana Te Otea is a great organization filled with people of different backgrounds. We find mentorship, friendship, and comfort in each other. We make our costumes together every year, which allows bonding time between members.

We practice Fall quarter and Winter quarter in preparation for our annual benefit concert, "Island Wishes" during the Spring quarter in Campbell Hall. All proceeds go to a charity that we select. In the past we have donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties, Direct Relief and most recently, the Hospice of Santa Barbara. Throughout the year we host fundraising events that help fund for our costume materials, club events, and facility rentals. Remember, everyone has a little Aloha spirit in them, so we'll see you in the Fall!
